64 Wins and a #1 Pick?

The Oklahoma City Thunder are heading into the playoffs exactly where every franchise hopes to be: on top. Defending champs with a 64–18 record, Oklahoma City has become “the standard” in the Western Conference.

But what makes this moment truly bizarre and potentially historic, is that their season could have a little twist when it comes to the NBA Draft lottery.

Thanks to a previously acquired pick swap with the Los Angeles Clippers, the Thunder are now in the unusual position of watching the lottery with real stakes. The Clippers’ season ended abruptly after a play-in loss to the Golden State Warriors, dropping them into lottery territory and opening the door, however slightly, for the Thunder to benefit.

If Golden State beats the Phoenix Suns tonight, the Thunder will hold a 2% chance at landing the No. 1 overall pick. If the Warriors lose, that probability dips slightly to 1.5%.

Either way, it’s a long shot but not an impossible one. Just last season, the Dallas Mavericks won the lottery with only a 1.8% chance, jumping all the way to No. 1 and selecting Cooper Flagg out of Duke. What looked like a statistical footnote turned into a franchise-altering moment overnight.

That precedent is exactly why Oklahoma City’s situation is so fascinating. Imagine the scenario: the best team in basketball not only competing for a championship, but also adding the top prospect in the draft. One unlikely outcome that could tilt the future even further in Oklahoma City’s favor.

It’s rare for a team to sit at the top of the present and still have a grip on the future.

The Thunder might be doing both at once.
