LeBron James' Next Move

The biggest story in the NBA this summer will be what LeBron James decides to do for his future. He will become an unrestricted free agent which means he can sign wherever he wants. Or he can walk away. Let’s have a look at a few options in our opinion on what he could decide to do.

He Stays in LA

The Los Angeles Lakers surprised many by making it to the second round of the NBA playoffs without star Luka Doncic. Having a healthy Luka for the playoffs perhaps could have changed their fate vs the Oklahoma City Thunder who swept the Lakers 4-0. That, and playing another season or two with his son Bronny James could be enough to convince him to give it another go in LA. Another 1-2 year deal would open up a window for LeBron, Bronny, and his youngest son Bryce to all play somewhere together. Bryce should join the draft after next season in my opinion, but there are rumours out there of him declaring for the draft as early as 2026. I don’t see that happening.

Back home to Cleveland

Perhaps one last run back home with the Cleveland Cavaliers would make sense for James. Heading back home to finish out his career would seem fitting for him and his family. The Cavs are one win away from a conference finals appearance in the East. So they have a decent roster from their conference's perspective. James Harden has a player option and can walk in the offseason if he chose to do so. So the cap space should be there to sign James if Harden walks. Maybe Harden and James work together to make the numbers work and they both are on the Cavs in 26-27. Let’s face it, a Finals run in the East is way easier than trying to get there in the West.

Ring chase on a loaded team

He could wait out the summer, see what all the teams look like and join an already stacked team to chase another ring. This would most likely require a massive pay cut. But I have a feeling money won’t be a priority this time around if he continues playing. Maybe it’s his time to sit back, let some young bucks carry the load and just be a depth piece to the puzzle. San Antonio Spurs, Oklahoma City Thunder, Minnesota Timberwolves, New York Knicks, and Detroit Pistons come to mind here. This scenario feels unlikely to me honestly.

Retirement

I don’t feel this happening yet but really there’s nothing left to do, or prove, for LeBron. There’s no way to end the Jordan-LeBron debate even if he did win another title. People are set in their ways and have their own decisions on why they think one or the other is the GOAT. This debate will go on forever and playing longer won’t change that. So after re-writing the record books this could be the end of an era. A true legend of the game. His flowers will given when he makes this choice but again I still feel as if it’s unlikely. I think one season playing with Bryce somewhere will be when he ultimately decides he’s done.

Final Thoughts

So here we all sit. With no clue as to what will happen this offseason. But the stories will be pumping one after one until the family decides what they want to do. Day by day time goes by knowing that we are getting closer to the end. The most durable, and greatest professional athlete we’ve seen in sports' time is almost up. Enjoy it while we can!

Or we can always go with the body language expert and call it a day lol..
