Alphonso Davies and the Canada men's national soccer team have been dealt a major setback just weeks before the World Cup.
The star left-back recently returned from a right hamstring strain, but has now suffered an injury to his left hamstring during Bayern Munich’s Champions League semifinal against Paris Saint-Germain.
The estimated recovery timeline is approximately 4–5 weeks, putting his availability for Canada’s opening World Cup match against Bosnia-Herzegovina in serious doubt. That match is scheduled to take place in Toronto exactly five weeks from today.
Canada may also be without another key player in rising striker Promise David.
David suffered a ruptured hip tendon in late February, though recent reports suggest he is ahead of schedule in his recovery. He is expected to undergo an MRI at the end of May to determine whether he will be fit enough to participate in the tournament.
One key date to watch is June 1st, the deadline for final World Cup squad submissions. Canada will need as much depth and star power as possible if they hope to make a dream run this summer.
Currently ranked 30th in the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings, Canada is still searching for its first ever victory at a FIFA World Cup.
