The Edmonton Oilers find themselves down 3-1 in their best of seven series against the Anaheim Ducks after last night’s controversial goal in overtime.

The heavily favoured Oilers are now facing elimination in the first round which no one saw coming. However that’s the beauty in sports, nothing is given. It must be earned. Now let’s break down what happened last night and whether the right decisions were made by the officials to give the Ducks the victory.

Here you can view the play itself and make your own call on what you think should’ve been the outcome.

My quick take is this:

No official was in any type of position to call that a goal. It never should have been called a goal on the ice when none of the officials saw the puck cross the line. That being the case, upon review you do not see the full puck cross the line. Therefore in my opinion play should’ve continued and it should have been ruled no goal.

Was it a goal though? Yes, most likely the puck barely, and I mean barely crossed the line by millimetres. So in essence the outcome was correct. Whatever was ruled on the ice either way would not have been overturned due to the fact that you cannot fully see the puck or the goal line.

This is where my issue is. The ruling on the ice was wrong. Officials should never have even ruled it a goal when they weren’t in any position to make that call.

Outcome = correct

Ruling on the ice = incorrect

Ultimately this all means nothing now and the Oilers need to gather themselves and go on a tear to get back into this series. They put themselves in this position and must dig their way out with the best player in the world, Connor McDavid, leading the way.

32 teams have comeback from down 3-1 so it can be done. The last team to do it was the Florida Panthers vs the Boston Bruins in 2023.

Game 5 is Tuesday night in Edmonton.
